The Exercise Science major is broad-based and nationally recognized. Students gain practical experience in our well-equipped biomechanics and exercise physiology labs. The major focuses on content areas needed for certification preparation by several organizations in this professional field of study, such as the American College of Sports Medicine. Students begin this major by taking introductory core classes with an emphasis on science classes such as anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and exercise physiology. Then they take more specialized sequence courses including exercise programming, physiological assessment, fitness management, health and disease, and instructional methods courses in aquatic and aerobic fitness, resistive exercise, and stress management.
Students prepare for careers in exercise physiology, biomechanics, sport psychology, motor learning, and physical activity and fitness. They may also prepare for continuing education in areas such as physical therapy. Graduates are employed in clinical, corporate, commercial, governmental, and community settings.
