Program Requirements & Courses
Our Mission:
The mission of the Illinois State University ATEP is to prepare students for the profession of athletic training while emphasizing integrated learning, problem-solving, critical thinking, and professionalism.
Selective Admission to the Program:
Applications to the Athletic Training Education (Clinical) Program are due on or before November 30th each year. Applications are only accepted one time each year, with admission to the clinical program occurring in January. Eligibility to apply for admission will be determined by the director of Athletic Training Education. Applicants compete for available spaces in the program. The following criteria must be met for acceptance:
- Fulfill university requirements up to the time of application to the ATEP Clinical Instruction Practicum;
- Completion of prerequisite coursework with a grade of 'C' or better;
KNR 181, Anatomy & Physiology,
KNR 188, Introduction to Athletic Training,
KNR 188.01, Introduction to Athletic Training Laboratory - includes 50 directed observation hours
- Overall GPA of 2.70 or better and major GPA of 2.70 or better;
- Completed application for admittance to the ATEP Clinical Instruction Practicum;
- Students must meet the technical standards for program admittance as described in the Physical Exam and Technical Standards Form.

Students successful in the four previous criteria are then considered for acceptance into the clinical portion of the program. Placement is limited by the number of clinical sites and availability of approved clinical instructors. Applicants may be granted full acceptance into the clinical portion of the program or qualified and placed on a waiting list. Highest priority will be given to the most qualified applicants based on the following criteria:
- overall and major grade point average
- grades in prerequisite courses
- completion of required observation hours (this is built into the grade for KNR 188.01)
- quality of written essay submitted with application
- performance evaluations from clinical instructors
- score on an athletic training general knowledge examination
- two written recommendations from qualified individuals
- completion of an interview with members of the athletic training faculty

Selective Retention for the Program:
Once admitted to the Athletic Training Clinical Education Program, the student will begin clinical work in athletic training at Illinois State University. Requirements for continued progress in the program include:
- The student must complete a physical examination from a qualified physician or medical practitioner using the form provided at the time of admission to the program. The student is also required to submit informed consent for blood-borne pathogens, travel, release of information, approved clinical hours, and first aid provider activities.
- A cumulative and major GPA of 2.70 or better.
- Grades of "C" or better must be earned in major courses. If a student needs to repeat a course, progress in completing the program might be delayed.
- Grades of "C" or better must be earned on each clinical instructor evaluation. These evaluations serve to measure not only student knowledge and acquired skill application but also attributes including dependability, reliability, initiative, adherence to published policies and procedures, and acceptance of responsibility.
- The student must complete all cases associated with the case-based learning (CBL) component of the clinical instruction program. These cases are completed in in accordance with the approved clinical instructor and are assigned by the clinical coordinator. Completed cases must be submitted by the due date in written format. Every student must complete 36 CBL cases throughout the clinical instruction program.
- As a representative of the university, school, and the athletic training program, the student is responsible for maintaining the standards and expectations established by the program including those published in the program policies and procedures manual located herein. Failure to uphold these standards and expectations, after being so notified, will result in dismissal from the program.
