Exercise Physiology Laboratories

Physiological Assessment Laboratory - Instructional Laboratory - Fitness Laboratory

The Exercise Physiology and Fitness Laboratories comprise approximately a 3,000 square foot facility located in Horton Fieldhouse (rooms 309 and 319 at Illinois State University). The laboratories are separated by a newly built classroom which provides a location for laboratory based instruction (classroom size for 16 students). Breakout rooms for hands-on instruction in the areas of fitness assessment, metabolic testing, body composition, pulmonary function analysis, and blood chemistry comprise the remaining laboratory spaces.

The classroom and laboratories have computers, printers (laser & color printers) and Internet access that are available for student usage. The Exercise Physiology laboratory also has office space for the laboratory director (Dale D. Brown, Ph.D.) and graduate students in exercise physiology. Students in exercise physiology and exercise science are encouraged to participate and get involved in ongoing laboratory research activities of faculty and students or pursue their own research interests. They are also encouraged to gain "hands-on" experience by either participating in or helping with the variety of physical assessments (body composition, lung function, oxygen consumption analysis, etc.) that frequently occur throughout each semester.

The purpose of the Exercise Physiology and Fitness Laboratories is to provide knowledge and experience through hands-on learning to undergraduate and graduate students within physical education, athletic training, exercise science, and other related fields. These experiences are provided through class activities, out-of-class projects, student research, and faculty research efforts.

Additionally, the Exercise Physiology and Fitness Laboratories promote health and fitness through the physical fitness assessment program where students, faculty, and community people can receive comprehensive health screening assessments with consultations on how to interpret and implement healthy lifestyles and behaviors.
