Picture of Dr. Dave Thomas, Interim School DirectorThank you for visiting our Web site. The School of Kinesiology and Recreation (KNR) offers a wide-variety of degree programs in some of the fastest growing professional fields. Our graduates enjoy a very high placement rate and are considered some of the best prepared students entering today’s competitive job market.

As part of the College of Applied Science and Technology, the School of Kinesiology and Recreation has long history of producing excellent graduates, and we are proud to continue to carry on that tradition. Our School offers diverse degree options at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

At the undergraduate level, in Kinesiology, there are majors in Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Physical Education Teaching, and in Recreation, students can major in Recreation Management or Therapeutic Recreation. Undergraduate minors are offered in Coaching, Exercise Science, Physical Education Teacher Education, and Recreation and Park Administration. We also offer a comprehensive program of lifetime fitness activities that can be taken as elective courses by students from across the campus.

At the Master’s level, students choose from six sequence options: Athletic Training, Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity, Recreation Administration, and Sports Management that allow students to tailor their programs of study to meet professional goals.

Laboratories in anatomy, athletic training, biomechanics, motor learning, physiologic assessment, and teacher education support the teaching and research efforts of our faculty. The School of KNR is dedicated to providing modern technology in both the classroom setting and in the laboratories.

We are proud of our outstanding faculty who are committed to exemplary teaching, high quality scholarship, and professional service. Our faculty members are strongly committed to excellence in teaching and to working with students in support of their professional development.

Several faculty members have won College of Applied Science and Technology, Illinois State University, or external teaching and research awards. In scholarship, our faculty has published textbooks, articles in national and international academic journals, and has made presentations at state, regional, national, and international conferences. Many of these presentations and research publications are co-authored with our students.

Career opportunities for our students include:

  • Athletic Training – becoming certified athletic trainers working with high school, college, and professional teams
  • Exercise Science – working as professionals in clinical (cardiac rehabilitation, occupational therapy, and pulmonary rehabilitation), corporate (wellness and fitness programming), commercial (health clubs, personal training), community (YM/WCA, JCC, etc), strength and conditioning, biomechanics, sport and exercise psychology, and pre-professional fields such as physical therapy and physician’s assistant
  • Physical Education Teaching – teaching physical education K-12

Outstanding students in our programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels are encouraged to become involved in research, have opportunities to travel to professional conferences, and participate in campus-based research symposia. Further, we have five student organizations/clubs that offer excellent opportunities for socialization and professional development. These organizations are aligned with our undergraduate majors and our coaching minor.

Our students are very successful in receiving honors from various professional organizations and each spring, the School of KNR recognizes the outstanding achievements of our students at our annual awards ceremony.
